Childhood Obesity also known as Pediatric obesity is a condition where a child is notably overweight for their age and height. There seems to be no urgency of fixing this broken lifestyle which significantly leads to Physical and Mental complexities like low self-esteem, anxiety, diabetes, and even cancer. It’s believed that today’s children will have a shorter life expectancy compared to their parents because so many of them suffer from obesity. In India specifically, the prevalence rate is continuously increasing. With 14.4 million obese children, India comes second with the highest number of obese children in the world, after China. Needlessly, it is currently a scourge in India. Childhood obesity is also surrounded by quite a lot of myths. The most common myth being, “they will lose weight as they grow”. It’s not true because childhood obesity does not only affect the children in their young years but might also follow them to their adulthood and adult obesity is associated with serious health conditions including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. If youngsters have obesity, their obesity and illness hazard factors in adulthood are probably going to be more extreme. Now the question stands, why is it continuously increasing when it is deemed preventable? That is because to prevent Childhood obesity, one has to bring change in their day-to-day routine from their nutrients intake to how they spend their days. Sedentary activities are very common in the digital generation where kids consume television, YouTube, or play games the whole day, seated, which leads to weight gain. Other than that, the factor that also actively leads to weight gain is the ingestion of high calories. The alluring fast-food advertisement’s target audience is usually young children and we best believe, it’s successful. The problem can show signs of depletion when we, together, understand that this is unacceptable and create an environment that pays more attention to a healthy lifestyle. Small variations like finding a favorite sport and making fast food meals a Sunday meal, can do wonders in the long run.
