Animal cruelty in India

Animal cruelty is any kind of abuse towards animals or acts of cruelty or neglect. It can be distinguished into two main categories; active and passive. In the acts of passive cruelty, it is the neglect that is categorized as harmful or the lack of participation itself. More than often, this is practiced accidently because of being ignorant. While on the other hand, active animal cruelty is when someone inflicts harm on an animal with a malicious intent. In India, between 2010 and 2020, it was found that there were 720 cases of crime against street animals, 741 cases against working animals, 588 cases against companion animals, and 258 cases against wild animals and birds. Among these, approximately 1,000 cases were of brutal assault including 82 cases were of sexual abuse, 266 cases of cold-blooded murder, and over 400 cases were of violent attacks of beating, kicking, torturing, throwing acid or boiling water, maimi

ng a part of the body, attacking with a knife or a blunt object. 20 of such reported cases were committed by children. In India, crimes against animals are not taken seriously with charges confining to little amounts of fines. This acts as a catalyst as it allows people to continue living well at the expense of a life that cannot defend itself. The only hope for this matter can be seen once this is addressed and strict consequences are provided for people participating in such activities.
