SEX EDUCATION

SEX EDUCATION

We as humans come across a number of issues in our day to day lives, issues that have an impact on our life in various manners. But out of these issues there exist several issues that we know about but we still shy away from talking about them, these issues are considered a taboo in our s,ociety. One such issue is sex education, an issue that needs to be addressed and talked about but the society has always shied away from talking about it. When it comes to children it is always believed that conversations related to sex and sexuality are considered too adult. A study has proved that conversations about sex and sexuality are something considered outside of the conservative social fabric of the family and hence is something never talked about.  But why is sex education still considered a taboo in our society?

“If someone would have talked in school about safe touch and unsafe touch, I believe I would have spoken up as a child and not been victimized over and over again for years, but that day never came, which is why my mission now is to protect children from the childhood I could not be protected from.”

To answer this question the only possible argument that as been put forward is that, India is a culturally rich nation, which possesses diverse cultures, beliefs as well as customs. This culture and values of the nation have always prevented the society to talk about sex education. The diverse culture and value possessed by the nation has always been used as an argument against sex education. People believe that sex education is something that goes against the culture as well as the values possessed by us.

But, studies have proven that when it comes to ancient India there were temples built to teach students about the different stages of life. From creation of love to the essence of companionship everything was taught to the students as they entered the next phase of life. Not only this but there are also several temples in India with sculptures that have symbolised the unison of male and female which in religious terms tends to the unison of Shiva and Shakti. The subject we shy away from talking about today on the name of our culture and values is something which has been talked about in the past.

In India ,people still feel shy when they hear about sex, because they were never taught about it before. To break this taboo educating people effectively would broaden the horizon and bring a prominent change In the society.

Here are some points which tells why sex education is important

·        After we reach a adolescent age there will be a hormonal changes and it’s common that we would attract to the opposite sex think what would happen if a child  is unaware of it they would badly regret about it in the future and this would often lead to usage of birth control pills, abortion, forced pregnancy, depression  and  many more , this would adversely effect the life’s of an individual.

·        In India sex is considered only for recreation and this causes many social issues like poverty, over- population ,increasing level of rapes and harassment and people would be unaware of family planning. Teaching them before about it would give an insights as how to deal with it and what are it’s ill effects like STD/HIV,hepatitis and other deadly disorders.

·        Nowadays, everything has been digital ,we will deal with many strange people around us ,who knows what’s their intention behind the social face . We are evidencing many cyber crimes wherein people without knowing who the person they deeply believe in them and become a culprit for fulfilling their physical needs this would lead to depression and in many cases even suicide .If  we educate people about this by providing necessary knowledge about that  we would safeguard our younger generation.

·        Even though we are living in a Country where we have all rights of freedom but what’s the use of it, if we can’t use it!!! There are hell lot of cases everyday wherein a girl who was going back home was brutally raped and murdered .Even though we are in 21st century we are scared to go out late at night. They strongly feel that making people aware of this would help them in empowering themselves.

Reality check

·        80% In India experience sexual harassment and abuses.

·        For every 15min a woman is raped in India.

Sex education would change the statistics of crime In this country and gender specific crimes.

women’s needs to be respected they are not born to be used sexually”. A proper sexual education will nurture the good values and not leave a bad impression to the kids.

Government initiative towards sex education

In India, private schools have the liberty to choose whether to include sexuality education in their curriculum or not .However, no such attempts have been made from the public schools. There was no response from the central government against the decision of the state government of banning AEP

Telangana became the first state to make ‘gender education ‘compulsory at the graduation level and has also introduced a bilingual ‘towards world of equals ‘.

The curriculum of sex and sexuality education is essential for the students to be sensitized from a very young age. This is also important to be taken into account that the content must be contextually relevant and age appropriate. The unreliable sources of information on these topics may act extremely harmful for the growth of the individuals as well as for the boasting of self-esteem and confidence.

What do you think is sex education should be made mandatory or not?
