PLIGHT OF WOMEN IN INDIA - WITCH BRANDING

Many social problems especially against women take place in society. One among them is witch branding. Though we all talk about the importance of feminism and equality in the society, still there isn't entire freedom for women in the society.


One of the social violences against women is witch branding. Women are even killed with such a name!! These happen mostly in villages where people aren't educationally developed yet.


Jharkhand is the most affected state where women are commonly branded as witch crafts.They even have an act called witchcraft prevention Act. There are maximum punishments for witch branding related crimes but the problem with this is that they are yet to be implemented. 


When women are being witch branded, they are brutally tormented, abused and sometimes put to death. This can even happen because of the male chauvinistic society prevalent in traditional countries like India where women cannot have the right to speak up for themselves.


Sometimes women are wrongly accused of having the power of witchcraft. This may be due to the background of the woman who may belong to a tribal community or so. People think that such women with occult powers can cause harm to their fellow beings and they turn deaf to the portrayal of the situation according to the accused ones.


We do have witchcraft folktales in our literature too. Maybe the author of the story's way of portrayal of the woman made her a witch. Such portrayal in real life may sometimes lead to falsely blaming or branding a woman as a witchcraft. The northern part of India too brands women as witchcraft and people try to abuse, them which is the saddest part of the country. 


The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) are truly putting efforts to legally abolish witch branding. But the plight of women because of witch branding hasn't been reduced yet.According to their record, 98 deaths and 1,857 incidents related to witch hunting have taken place only in the state of Jharkhand. Five women were tortured and killed because of witch branding.


There are many hidden murders, harassments and accusations in the country against women regarding witch branding. Many women are murdered, tortured, blamed, harassed, accused, kidnapped and lost as they were wrongly branded as witch crafts. This may be due to the religious beliefs and superstitions of the community. Many communities in India who belong to the uneducated classes lynch women for the purpose of witch hunting.


The solution for stopping the witch branding of women is to educate ourselves and release ourselves from superstitious beliefs. Stopping our whims and prejudices against women can also end the plight of Indian women. Respecting women for their position in the society and stopping abuse and quitting false accusations against women such as witch branding can truly produce a world of freedom to be enjoyed by women!!
