BETI BACHAO, BETI PADHAO – A SUCCESS ? To help in women empowerment and equality certain drives and campaigns have been set up along with several scholarships and help provided by the government.  The questions that need to be considered are  Are these schemes really helpful?  Did they help in changing society’s mind?  Did they change the backward thinking of the people?  Did they put an end to the rape culture in India?  Has there been any increase in the number of school-going girls ?   In order to find answers to these questions, let us take a look into what the ‘BetiBachaoBetiPadhao' project actually is. To celebrate the birth of a girl child in the family the government has come forth with several programs that would help them to study and get settled. The programs are also expected to aid the women in their marriage. Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) was launched by the Prime Minister of India on 22nd January 2015 at Panipat, Haryana....

SEX EDUCATION

Image
SEX EDUCATION We as humans come across a number of issues in our day to day lives, issues that have an impact on our life in various manners. But out of these issues there exist several issues that we know about but we still shy away from talking about them, these issues are considered a taboo in our s,ociety. One such issue is sex education, an issue that needs to be addressed and talked about but the society has always shied away from talking about it. When it comes to children it is always believed that conversations related to sex and sexuality are considered too adult. A study has proved that conversations about sex and sexuality are something considered outside of the conservative social fabric of the family and hence is something never talked about.    But why is sex education still considered a taboo in our society? “If someone would have talked in school about safe touch and unsafe touch, I believe I would have spoken up as a child and not been victimized ove...

SELF-IMPROVEMENT

Image
“No matter who you are, no matter what you did, no matter where you’ve come from, you can always change; become a better version of yourself.”    - Madonna.   After reading this quote, you think of “self-improvement”. To all of us, Self-improvement is needed in our daily lives just like we need food and water. Self-improvement comes from experiences.  The aims of self-improvement are to learn to adopt a positive mind-set, to get rid of negative habits, and to build positive habits and behaviours. It is a way to make ourselves better and happier people. Though it is intangible, its forces are mighty. You can bring more power, more wealth, more happiness, more joy and more health into your life by believing yourself and by positive thinking. You have a mind, and you should ...

The regressive role that religion, caste, creed and faith often play when it comes to marriages and relationships:

Image
“The Caste System cannot be said to have grown as a means of maintaining purity of blood. As a matter of fact, Caste system came into being long after the different races of India had commingled in blood and culture…What racial affinity is there between the Brahmin of Punjab and the Brahmin of Madras?...What racial difference is there between the Brahmin of Madras and the Pariah of Madras?...I am convinced that the real remedy is inter-marriage. Fusion of blood can alone create the feeling of being kith and kin and unless this feeling of kinship, of being kindred, becomes paramount the separatist feeling – the feeling of being aliens – created by Caste will not vanish…” -          B.R. Ambedkar   Let’s begin by considering the definition of marriage. A marriage is a social event and it is also a religious occasion. It is an auspicious ceremony – a ceremony that is believed to legalise the sacred bond that two consenting partners (who m...

Why focusing on menstrual health and hygiene is the need of the hour? "We knew we shouldn’t be ashamed. We weren’t ashamed. We were  grown-ass women—which is obviously why we paraded to the restrooms with tampons secretly stuffed into our cardigan sleeves as though we were spies delivering encrypted information…” - Chandler Baker, Whisper Network In order to address the issue of menstrual hygiene and snub the stigma and taboos that people often attach to it, we need to understand what the process of menstruation really is.  Menstruation begins between the ages of 12-15 and continues till the woman is 45-50 years old. It is the disposal of blood and mucosal tissues from the vagina and it occurs for a span of about five days every month . The interval between the first day of the ongoing period and the first day of the next period is 21-31 days (on an average 28 days) . If there is no sign of menstruation even after the age of 15 or if...
